OVERVIEW

With so many options to choose from, you need to be strategic when shopping for a facial cleanser for dry skin. This first skincare step is vital for any skincare routine, and a face wash for dry skin can help address the unique challenges of this skin type—and work with other products in your regimen to keep your skin looking healthy. At the very least, an effective facial cleanser for dry skin should provide the skin with extra hydration—and it’s important to choose a gentle formula that doesn’t leave the skin feeling stripped.

What to look for in a facial cleanser for dry skin

  • Ceramides to help restore and maintain the skin's barrier and prevent disruption caused by cleansing
  • A non-comedogenic, gentle, fragrance-free formula developed with dermatologists
  • A mild, gentle formula
  • Ingredients that attract moisture, such as Hyaluronic Acid

A closer look at dry skin

Anyone can experience dry skin at any age, and it is often caused by the skin losing too much water or its natural oils. Dry skin can occur at any age and can be caused by excessive water or natural oil loss in the skin. Causes of dry skin include a lack of available moisture in the surrounding air, harsh soaps and other skincare products, a genetic predisposition that results in the skin producing less sebum (or oil), certain medications (such as those designed to lower cholesterol)1 and chronic conditions like eczema, psoriasis and diabetes.

Regardless of the specific root cause, most dry skin has one thing in common: a compromised skin barrier. The skin’s barrier is designed to keep moisture in and irritants out, but when it doesn’t perform as it should, it’s easier for moisture to evaporate and potential irritants to enter.

Ingredients to look for

In addition to a mild, gentle formula, there are a few additional beneficial ingredients to look for in a facial cleanser for dry skin.

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Found naturally within the skin, hyaluronic acid is a sugar that is naturally produced by the body and is responsible for the skin’s plumpness and volume. This ingredient can attract and retain moisture, making it an excellent non-comedogenic hydrating ingredient. A facial cleanser for dry skin with hyaluronic acid forms a layer of hydration on top of the skin that enhances its feeling of softness and smoothness. In addition to hydrating the skin’s surface, hyaluronic acid also helps plump the skin.

  • Ceramides: Ceramides are lipids that act as “mortar” between the skin’s cellular “bricks” to help reinforce the skin’s barrier and help the skin retain moisture. Ceramides also help the skin barrier protect against environmental aggressors like irritants and pollutants. Without the proper ratio of ceramides, the skin’s barrier can become compromised, which can lead to dryness, itching and irritation. A facial cleanser for dry skin that contains ceramides can help minimize barrier disruption caused by cleansing and increase the skin’s moisture levels.
